Brighid, both the Goddess and the Saint, is associated with the sun and
fire. In fact, her name is said to mean "fiery dart", and she is associated with
"fiery pursuits" such as smithcrafting, as well as the inspirational "fires" of
creativity.
As many of the myths associated with the Pagan Goddess Brighid have merged with the Christianised saint, this only proves that even today, Brighid is seen as a powerful role model and source of inspiration for the modern woman regardless of her spiritual belief.
While Brighid's sacred day of 1 February coincides with Imbolc, the commencement
of Spring, in the Northern Hemisphere, for those of us in the South Hemisphere, this dates heralds
in the hottest month of the year, where our southern land is prone to
dangerous bushfires. Yet, the native fauna of our unique land relies on these fires for their own transformation and regeneration.
"Brighid provides an image of empowerment, integrity, courage, and complexity. She was pagan and Christian, rich and poor, slave and free. She invites us, therefore, to focus on what we have in common, rather than on what divides us."
(Mary Condren, author of The Serpent and the Goddess: Women,
Religion and Power in Celtic Ireland )
On Saturday, 8 February 2014, you are invited to take part in a special
event focusing around honouring the sacred flames of Brighid, that has travelled from her centre in
Kildare (Ireland) to The Goddess House in Adelaide (Australia).
We will explore the various myths surrounding Brighid the Goddess as well as St Brighid, from her birth at sunrise to the keepers of her sacred flame.
Through the art of meditation, we will meet some of her various aspects as poet - healer - manifester - carer - initiator - guide - the one (or ones) most relevant to us at this particular time.

We will be using the powerful energy of the element fire to heal and transform ourselves, to remove the stagnant and unwanted in order for the desired to be generated and nurtured.
Burn away the stagnant and unwanted,
and allow yourself to be
transformed by the power of the Goddess.
