The mid Winter solstice may have gone and this morning the fragile sun is warming the land, but this is an illusion ... Winter is far from over as the weather can quickly change within a blink of an eye.
This time of uncertainty is ruled by the Bone Mother, the Goddess of Winter. Often referred to as the "Unknown One", the Bone Mother is often considered to be older than time itself for it was she who created time - to the Hindus, she is referred to as Kali. She is also considered to be of the land, yet as she walked, she created the land. To the inhabitants of the British Isles and Ireland, and in particular of the islands off north west Scotland, she is known as the Cailleach.
The Bone Mother reminds us of the beauty and deep wisdom that can be found within this time of stillness. She is the face of death, culling that which is no longer required. But she is also the bringer of life, for it is through her seemingly "brutal" action that the Child of Winter, the Promised One who is the seed of new life, can be brought forth.
It seems rather appropriate therefore for the first devotional service for 2102 to be held at The Goddess House will be in honour of the Bone Mother and the Child of Winter. This service will include a specially constructed meditation on this theme, and will conclude with a healing circle.
The service will commence at 7:30pm and conclude between 8:30 and 9:00pm. The cost is only $10.00 or $5.00 with a canned donation for the Animal Welfare League (SA). These services are open to both men and women.
